The miracle of movement! We have the ability to go where we want when we want. When we have the pleasure of feeling our bodies glow with the health that consistent, intentional exercise brings, we are in good health indeed.

We are meant to move... our bodies are a miracle of muscle and ligaments that are build to hold us together and to allow us the freedom of mobility!

However as we age, we do less of this necessary life enhancing activity, sometimes much less. Some of us have had lifelong jobs where we sit at a desk and in front of a computer for hours on end. Then because we are tired at the end of that work day, we go home to do ...more sitting!

If we don't use and exercise our muscles we will lose the ability to use them; walking, standing even sitting will become difficult if we do not have strong core muscles. Anything not used tends to rust, atrophy, go to waste. Our core muscles are those that hold us up-right and together! Knee pain, back pain, neck pain can be alleviated with stretching, and weight bearing exercises.

A few "mid-life" gentle movement activities and things to do that will also keep us limber and strong:

  • walking
  • biking
  • swimming
  • Qigong
  • Yoga

All are gentle movements that can be built upon as we gain back muscle, and for those of us who haven't lost any muscle tone, they are a great way to ensure we don't! Pick a couple of your favorites, mix it up, do something every day, even if it is just for 30 minutes. Movement is life enhancing!
