So-Hum Meditation
This is one of my favorite meditation techniques, I hope it will be one of yours as well. So-Hum is a simple but powerful practice that uses the breath and the repetition of mantra that will help you calm the mind and relax the body. The So-Hum mediation will help you take your awarness from a state of constriction to a state of expanded consciousness.
To begin, sit in a comfortable position where you will not be disturbed and gently close your eyes. Take a few moments to simply observe the inflow and outflow of your breath.
Now take a slow deep breath through your nose while thinking the sound So...
Exhale slowly through your nose while thinking the sound Hum. Allow your breathing to flow easily, silently repeating So-Hum with each inflow and outflow of your breath. Whenever your attention drifts to thoughts in your mind, sounds in your environment, or sensations in your body, gently bring your attention back to your breath, silently repeating the So-Hum mantra.
After your sitting time has passed, gently bring yourself back, stop repeating your So-Hum mantra, keeping your eyes closed, put your hands into the prayer mudra (palms together, fingers pointing upward), bring your hands close to your heart, and with your eyes still closed, honor yourself with a slight bow, while chanting Om three times. This is to honor yourself for taking this time to calm your thoughts, and in turn heal the body. Hold on to the feeling of calm for as long as possible after your practice, taking it with you as you continue with the rest of your day.
Start Your Day...
This is one of my favorite methods of starting the day. I learned about it during the movie "The Secret" and it works!
In the morning, just as consciousness returns, while you are still laying in bed and before you even open your eyes, think of how you want to co-create your day. Not of all the chores you have to do nor the worries you may be think you have, nor what you wish or hope will happen, but how you want to create your day. Think of what you want to achieve with the day you have been given (if you've awakened, you have been given this day!) and what you WILL create.
Try this, do it every morning until it becomes second nature, and see what you can co-create in your life.
Pull Out of a Funk...
As we think, so we create...and there are days that are just more of a challenge to navigate than others. This method of doing a quick reality check is great for those times you just need to snap out of it!
Smile... that's right, just smile. Start at your mouth, and make it travel to your eyes. That's it. Smile as you do when you smile at a beloved one. Think of something you love with all of your heart; your child, you grandchild, your four footed fur-baby, your garden, your lover. Make that feeling last as long as you can...when you are focused on a positive feeling (such as unconditional love) you can't be in a funk at the same time.
So pull yourself out of it, find the place inside you that holds that always there and always ready wiggle of excitement, that feeling that everything is truly good and that you are grateful for the lessons life brings. Find the feeling that makes you experience joy, vibrating at a higher level (unconditional love is that higher level, as is smiling, as is kindness). This too is can be considered a meditation technique as it asks you to look inside for your bliss, where it always resides, and always will. No-thing outside of yourself can make it so.
The law of attraction is this: whatever vibrations you are sending out, positive or negitive, are the vibrations you are also attracting.
Walk tall with a strong stride, head up, smile at those you pass, human or animal. Other beings react to you in a whole different way than if you are in a funk!
Anytime spent focusing on the exact present is a meditation technique wheather it is focusing on the walk you are taking, the person you are with, the music in your head, the flower you are comtemplating...being in the present moment is the best of the best meditation techniques we have.
SMILE!
The Metta (Lovingkindness) Mantra
Metta means Lovingkindness. This mantra (or if you prefer prayer) is thousands of years old. It is a mantra that can be used in meditation to quiet the mind, repeated over and over with in inflow and outflow of breath as in the So-Hum meditation technique. Of course like any prayer, it can be said and repeated whenever and as often as you wish. Saying it in your mind, saying it out loud either way is all positive vibration and intent.
