You bet it does, and more now than ever before. As we age, oh ahem, I mean mature, our bodies struggle to maintain the some of the same levels of key nutrients to maintain a state of wellness that was easier to obtain when we were younger.     How exciting is that?

    My day can last well over 12 hours, as I am sure yours can as well, and I am not experiencing the end of day fatigue I usually do. Energy levels stay constant throughout the day and into the evening.     The Standard American Diet is just that... we know it and we are ready to improve not only our health, but that of our family as well.

    Being well informed and taking the lead (as Boomer Womem, we are fast becoming the matriarch's of our family clan) we can be agents for positive change. We can help our families achieve wellness and health as well as ensuring our own. In order to do that we must investigate what will help us stay in or acheive optimal health and wellness, we can create opportunities to achieve balance through antiaging nutrition in our daily lives.

    At different points along the path of our lives, our nutrition needs change. What we may have needed at the age of 20 something is not what we need now. Our vitamin and nutrition levels shift and change just as out bodies are shifting and changing...what we see on the outside is what is also, for the most part going on in the inside! We are what we eat that is a fact, so our nutrition is key to our overall wellness and vitality. Focusing on antiaging nutrition at this time in our lives will make a huge difference as we age. Illness is not something I want to have happen as I age, and it doesn't need to happen.

    Here are some facts:

    The typical American diet is too high in saturated fat, sodium, and sugar and too low in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, calcium, and fiber. This is not antiaging nutrition! Such a diet contributes to four of the six leading causes of death and increases the risk of numerous diseases, including:

    • heart disease
    • diabetes
    • obesity
    • hypertension
    • stroke
    • osteoporosis
    • many cancers (colon, prostate, mouth, throat, esophagus, lung, stomach)
    According to the USDA, improving our diets could prevent at least $71 billion per year in medical costs, lost productivity, and lost lives. That is an underestimate because it accounts for only diet-related coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes and not other diet-related diseases. Obesity alone is estimated to cost $117 billion, and osteoporosis costs $14 billion in medical expenses.

    According to the CDC, state and federal governments spend one thousand times more to treat disease than to prevent it ($1,390 vs. $1.21 per person each year).

    In addition to that the plant based foods; fruits,vegetables, grains available to most american's are sub-standard. Why? Because of modern farming practices that have scrubbed the fields and soils of esstenital nutrients, polluted them with pesticides and other chemicals, not to mention the fast growing effects of genetically modified foods that we have no real clue as to how it will effect humans down the road...so even if we are eating "right" we are not getting the same nutrition that we would have gotten say 40 or 50 years ago. One would need to eat 35 carrots of today to get the same vitamin value of one carrot grown and consumed 40 years ago.

    The health and wellness of generation after generation is being effected by this crisis, our children and our children's children will be less and less healthy as the years go by. These are just the agricultural end of things... then there is harvesting, transportation, processing, packaging, etc. What little healthy nutriton that may be in these foods then gets sprayed on, irradiated, and processed out.

    Organically grown is better, but the standards set for being organic only involves how a plant is grown, it does not address how it is transported, stored, and processed. Unfortunately that seal of approval is losing it's intented meaning and mark of assurance. Is that enough to convince us that we need nutritional help?

    As a personal aside: Most Americans have no clue as to how their animal based protein sources are "created"...factory farming is a source of national shame, horrendous, cruel, inhumane, are some of the words that come to mind. I will not go into that as it is very emotional for me, and is for anyone who makes themselves informed, but suffice to say that the pastorial scenes of farm life for these animals has been a thing of the past for centuries.

    Gandhi once said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral standards can be judged by the way its animals are treated" we have a long way to go in this regard. My personal choice has been to become 90% vegetarian while choosing certified pasture raised poultry for the occasional meal. You will feel the difference in your sense of being when you become conscious and aware of what nourishes your body, and where it comes from.
